The Ethnographic Museum

back to attractions

Discover hundreds of fascinating antiques from a century ago.
The Treasures in the Wall museum is located in the inner eastern wall of Akko, one of the thickest walls in the world. It displays rare collections and traditional handicrafts from the 19th century. The collections illustrate the folklore in the Galilee of all the religions and communities that existed in the region.

Akko’s “Treasures in the Wall” Museum is located inside the northeastern walls of Old Akko. Its aim is to preserve the city’s fascinating historical heritage and restore authentic sights from the past.

The walls were initially built by Al-Jazzar, the Ottoman ruler of the area, after Napoleon’s attempt to conquer the city in 1799. The commander’s tower (“Burj al-commander”) is divided into arched halls which were used to hold the Ottomans garrison and now hold beautiful and rare collections.

The hundreds of items displayed in the museum enable the visitors to get acquainted with the traditional craftsmen who worked in the markets, the spectacular furniture of the city’s well-to-do and the fabric of life in a city that was a unique meeting place of art and religion.

Beyond the museum’s permanent exhibitions, there are also rotating exhibitions every few months.

The magical blend of the original stone halls and the hundreds of objects on display generates a unique and special experience which gives an insight into the way of life in the Galilee during the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries.

The left wing of the museum is a reconstruction of old market stores and old craft workshops such as a hat-maker, leather-maker, a carpenter, wood-maker, a blacksmith and an old pharmacy. These are only some of the craftsmen visitors will meet during their visit to the market.

The right wing includes furniture, vessels, clocks and other collected items from the past.

Another pearl in the museum is the rounded inner courtyard on whose wall canons once stood. The garden now serves as a reception area for cultural evenings and private events.

The Museum is an attraction for adults and children alike.

Reservations can be made for guided tours accompanied by an actor who brings the objects to life (in more ways than one) and involves the public in the museum experience.
