International Harp Contest
The 19th International Harp Contest in Israel
22 November – 3 December 2015
The 19th International Harp Contest in Israel will be hosted for the first time at the magnificent Knights' Halls in Old Akko, a city declared by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site and is most famous for its good relations of co-existence between its residents and Jews and Arabs.
The International Harp Contest in Israel, so closely identified with King David, is the first competition in the world to be held for the harp. The Contest was founded in 1959 by A.Z. Propes and is honored to have Maestro Zubin Mehta serving as The Honorary President of the Israeli Harp Contest. The Music Committee of the International Harp Contest in Israel, as well as Florence Sitruk, Musical Director, volunteer their good services, talent and time for the Contest.
The Contest has also encouraged original composition for the harp. It commissions an Israeli work for each contest. The Propes Prize, for the best performance of the required Israeli composition, will be awarded in 2015 for the best performance of the newly composed Mizmor Shir by Menachem Wiezenberg.
Since 1959, the Contest in Israel has taken place every three years. A Gala Festive Concert will open the 19th Contest on 23rd November 2015. Harpist Anais Gaudemard, 1st Prize Winner of the 18th Contest in 2012, will be the soloist at the Festive Opening Concert.
26 contestants under the age of 35 of all nationalities are accepted by the Contest. The Contest lasts about two weeks and is held in 4 stages. Of the original 26, 12 pass to the Stage II; 6 pass to the Semi Finals and 3 to the Finals. The Final stage will take place on December 3rd, 2015.
The First Prize, a Gold Concert Grand Harp valued at US$ 55,000 is traditionally donated by Lyon & Healy of Chicago. A special Prize will be donated by the Mayor of Akko. Other monetary prizes are also generously donated by friends and supporters.
